On a first trip, stay in four bases: Sigiriya (2 nights) for the rock and cave temples, Kandy (1) for the temple and the train, Ella (2) for tea country, and Galle, Mirissa or Weligama (1 to 2) for the beach. Mid-range rooms run about ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a night. The best resorts are in Sigiriya, Weligama and Galle.

Where to stay in Sigiriya
Stay in Sigiriya village if you want to walk to the rock at 7 am. Habarana is 20 minutes away and better for Minneriya safaris.
- Luxury: Jetwing Vil Uyana. Private villas over rice paddies and wetland.
- Mid-range: Aliya Resort and Spa. Big pool with a view of the rock.
- Budget: family-run guesthouses on the road to Pidurangala.
Where to stay in Kandy
Stay up the hill, away from the traffic around the lake, but no more than 15 minutes from the Temple of the Tooth.
- Luxury: The Kandy House, a restored manor house outside the city.
- Mid-range: Earl's Regency, on the river with a large pool.
- Budget: guesthouses around Kandy Lake.
Where to stay in Ella
Pick a place with a view of Ella Gap. That view is the point of staying here.
- Luxury: 98 Acres Resort and Spa, on a tea estate facing Little Adam's Peak.
- Mid-range: small hotels on the Passara road with valley-view rooms.
- Budget: homestays in Ella town, walkable to cafes.
Where to stay in Galle and on the south coast
Galle Fort for history and evening walks. Mirissa or Weligama for beach time.
- Luxury: Amangalla inside Galle Fort, or Cape Weligama on a cliff above the bay.

How many hotels should you book?
Four for a 7-day trip, five at most for 10 days. Every hotel change costs you half a morning. If a plan has you in a new hotel every night, cut a stop.
