What is an AI travel agent, and when do you still need a person?

Short answer
Short answer: An AI travel agent is software you talk to that plans a trip and, unlike a chatbot, can also book it and act on it: compare flights and hotels, check you in, rebook a moved flight. It handles 80 to 90% of a normal trip well. You still want a person for visas, groups of 4+, disruptions abroad, and anything over about ₹3 lakh ($3,400).

"AI travel agent" now covers everything from ChatGPT writing an itinerary to apps that book and rebook for you. This page explains what the term means, what these tools do well, and where a person still earns their place. For a side by side of named tools, see the best AI trip planner guide. The 80 to 90% and ₹3 lakh figures above are our rule of thumb, not an industry statistic.
What does an AI travel agent actually do?
It takes a request in plain words and turns it into actions. The difference from an AI trip planner is the last step: a planner writes the plan; an agent books it or changes it.
| Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| AI chatbot | Ideas and draft itineraries; you check and book | ChatGPT, Gemini |
| AI assistant inside a booking app | Searches and books what that app sells | MakeMyTrip Myra, ixigo TARA, Expedia inside ChatGPT |
| AI trip manager | Reads your bookings, sends alerts, handles check-in and rebooking | Soar, TripIt Pro (alerts only) |
| AI + human agent | AI plans and books; a person checks and steps in | Cura, Swiggy Crew (invite-only) |
Where is an AI travel agent better than a person?
Speed and patience. It can compare 30 flight options in seconds, redo the plan at midnight for the fifth time, and remember that you hate early flights. It does not get bored of small changes, and it costs less per trip than a person's time.
When do you still need a person?
When a mistake is expensive or the rules are fuzzy. Five cases:
- Visas. A missing document can sink a ₹2 lakh trip. Rules change and differ by consulate.
- Disruptions abroad. When a flight is cancelled at 11 pm, someone has to call the airline, find a hotel and move the transfers.
- Groups and families. Six people, two kids, one grandparent: the trade-offs are human ones.
- Big or once-in-a-life trips. Honeymoons and milestone trips where one bad hotel ruins the week.
- Refunds and claims. Airlines owe you money under specific rules, like the US DOT's automatic refund rule (cancellations, or changes of over 3 hours domestic and 6 hours international) or India's DGCA rules (refund to card within 7 days). Knowing which rule applies, and pushing for it, is still people work.
Can an AI travel agent get things wrong?
Yes. General chatbots can state wrong prices, invent hotels or miss a visa rule; OpenAI's own terms say output "may not always be accurate". Agents tied to live booking systems make fewer price mistakes but can still build a plan that is tiring or impractical. That is why the plan needs checking before you pay.
How do AI travel agents make money?
Most earn a commission from the hotel or airline, charge a subscription, or both. Swiggy Crew charges ₹999 for six months; Soar takes a cut of stays. Ask to see the commission.
What we'd do
Cura is an AI + human travel agent.
So we are biased. With that said:
- Short, simple trip you enjoy planning: use ChatGPT for ideas and book direct.
- International trip with a visa, or a group: use an agent where a person checks the plan before you pay.
- Either way: check the visa on the official embassy site, keep bookings refundable until the visa is approved, and know your refund rights before you fly.
