Cura vs ChatGPT for trip planning: where AI stops and a travel agent starts

Written by a Cura travel advisor · Checked

Short answer

Short answer: Use ChatGPT as a trip planner when you want free ideas, a rough day-by-day and quick answers, and you are happy to check prices and book everything yourself. Use Cura when you want the trip planned door to door, flights and stays compared with a clear pick, a person checking the plan, help with visa paperwork, and someone who reshuffles things when a flight moves. Many people use both: ChatGPT to dream, Cura to book.

Want this trip planned and booked for you? Tell Cura where and when.

ChatGPT is one of the most used AI tools in the world, so it is where many trips now start. Ask it for "10 days in Japan in April" and you get a tidy plan in seconds. That plan is a good first draft. It is not a booking, and nobody stands behind it if a train time is wrong or a visa rule changed last month.

We build Cura, so we have a bias. We have tried to be fair: where ChatGPT is better, we say so. Facts about ChatGPT come from OpenAI's own pages and trade press, checked Oct 2026.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant made by OpenAI, a San Francisco company. It launched on 30 November 2022 and runs on the web, phones and desktop. It was not built for travel, but it is very good at language, so it can write an itinerary, compare regions, draft a packing list or explain how a rail pass works.

Since October 2025, logged-in users outside the EU can also see results from travel apps such as Booking.com and Expedia inside the chat, with live prices from those companies. You still complete the booking on the travel company's site, not in ChatGPT. OpenAI has retired its earlier agent mode in favour of ChatGPT Work, a mode for longer, multi-step tasks, with fuller access on paid plans.

What ChatGPT does well

  • It is free and instant. The free plan is enough to draft most trips. No sign-up forms, no waiting for a reply.
  • It is great at the dreaming stage. "Kyoto or Osaka as a base?" "Which Japanese Alps town is easiest by train?" It gives clear, useful answers to open questions.
  • You can reshape a plan in one line. "Make day 3 slower" or "swap the museum for a food market" works straight away.
  • It remembers you, if you let it. With Memory on, it can recall that you are vegetarian or hate early flights.
  • It is a good travel companion. Translating a menu from a photo, explaining a train ticket, or turning a long hotel policy into three lines are all real strengths.

Where ChatGPT falls short

  • It can be confidently wrong. OpenAI's own help pages say ChatGPT can make mistakes and that you should check important information. In travel, a wrong opening day or train time costs real money. (OpenAI help)
  • Plain chat prices are estimates. Unless it pulls from a connected app or a live search, the fares and hotel rates it quotes can be old or made up. The Booking.com and Expedia apps fix this for stays (and, with Expedia, flights), but you still book on their sites. (Skift)
  • Nobody owns the outcome. There is no human to call when a connection is missed or a hotel loses your booking. ChatGPT is a tool, not an agent working for you.
  • Visa rules move faster than models. It explains general rules well but does not prepare your file or check the latest consulate notice. Always confirm on the official visa portal.
  • Heavy use needs a paid plan. The free plan limits uploads, image creation, deep research and memory. (OpenAI pricing)

How Cura is different

Cura is an AI + human travel agent. In practice that changes four things:

  1. It ends in a booking, not a draft. Cura compares flights and stays side by side, says what it would pick and why, and books it. The commission it earns is shown on your receipt, so you can see how it makes money.
  2. A person checks the plan. A human advisor reviews plans and steps in when the AI is not enough, for example a tight connection or a hotel that needs a call.
  3. It keeps up after you book. If a flight moves, Cura reshuffles the transfers and stays that depend on it, instead of you starting a new chat.
  4. Your papers live in one place. Tickets, visas and documents sit together in the app, and Cura helps with visa paperwork.

Where ChatGPT wins: it costs nothing to start, it answers any question in any field, and it is the faster tool for a quick brainstorm.

Same trip, both tools: a test you can run

Give both tools the same brief, word for word, on the same day:

"7 days in Japan for two in April, ₹3 lakh ($5,000) total, vegetarian, no early flights."

Then score each result. We will publish our own dated results here; until then the cells stay blank rather than guessed.

Tip if you run it yourself: open the airline and hotel sites in another tab and check two prices from each plan. That one step tells you more than any review.

Who should use ChatGPT, and who should use Cura

Use ChatGPT if you:

  • want ideas and a rough plan for free
  • enjoy checking fares and booking each piece yourself
  • are travelling somewhere easy, with no visa and few moving parts

Use Cura if you:

  • want the trip planned and booked, not just drafted
  • want a person to check the plan before you pay
  • have a visa to sort, a tight connection, or more than two cities
  • would rather send a reel and get a plan back than write prompts

Other ChatGPT alternatives

  • Mindtrip: a travel-only AI with maps, group chat and in-chat hotel and flight booking in some markets.
  • Layla: a chat-first AI trip planner, now owned by Expedia Group.
  • Wanderlog: a planner app for people who like to build the trip themselves, great for groups.
  • Google Gemini: strong if you live in Google Flights, Maps and Gmail.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT good for planning an international trip?

Yes for the first draft: routes, how many days, what to see, rough budgets. Check every price, opening day and visa rule on the official site before you pay, because ChatGPT can be wrong and does not book on its own.

Can ChatGPT book flights and hotels?

Not by itself. Apps from Booking.com and Expedia inside ChatGPT (outside the EU) can show live hotel and flight options, but you complete the booking on those companies' sites. Cura compares options, says what it would pick, and books for you.

Is ChatGPT free for trip planning?

Yes. The free plan is enough for most itineraries. Paid plans start at ₹399 a month in India (Go); Plus is ₹1,999 ($20) a month, and gives more use of the best models and tools.

Which AI travel assistant handles visas and travel insurance?

General chatbots explain the rules but do not prepare your file. Cura keeps tickets, visas and documents together and helps with visa paperwork, with a person checking. For insurance, compare policies on the insurer's site and check the cover your visa needs.

AI travel app or a traditional travel agency: which is better?

An AI app is faster and cheaper for simple trips. A traditional agency gives you a person but is often slow and works from a fixed list of packages. Cura sits between the two: AI does the research and comparing, a human checks the plan and helps when things go wrong.

Can I use ChatGPT and Cura together?

Yes. Many people brainstorm in ChatGPT, then paste the draft or send a reel to Cura to turn it into a checked, priced and booked trip.
