Is it worth using a travel agent in 2026?

Written by Writer 3, Cura travel advisor · Checked

Short answer

Yes, if the trip is complex: international, several cities, a visa, peak dates, parents or kids, or a group. A good agent costs nothing to about ₹26,400 ($300) in fees, because most earn hotel and tour commissions of about 10% instead. No, for a simple trip: one city, a return flight and a hotel. Book that yourself.

Ten years ago the question was whether travel agents would survive the internet. In 2026 the question is sharper: with every price online and AI that can write an itinerary in seconds, what is a person still worth? This page answers that, with the costs, the protections and a simple test. It sits under our travel planner guide. Checked Oct 2026.

When is a travel agent worth it?

When the cost of getting it wrong is bigger than the fee. That is usually trips with moving parts.

Your tripWorth using an agent?Why
Weekend in one city, direct flightNoNothing to coordinate
First international tripYesVisa, forex, insurance and transfers all at once
Europe, Japan or the US with a visaYesDocument lists and appointment timing decide whether you travel at all
Three or more cities with trains or internal flightsYesRouting and connection times are where DIY plans break
Parents, kids, or a group of 6+YesRooms, food, pace and rebooking for several people
Honeymoon or milestone tripUsuallySmall upgrades and timing matter more than saving a fee
Points and miles redemptionRarelyYou know your accounts better than anyone

What does a travel agent cost in 2026?

Less than most people assume. Agents earn in three ways, and you only see one of them directly.

How they earnTypical sizeDo you see it?
Commission from hotels and car rentalsAbout 10%, paid by the supplierUsually not
Commission from toursAbout 10%, or a net rate with a markupUsually not
Airline commissionOften little or nothing; 10 to 22% on some international contractsNo
Service or planning feeOver half of US advisors charge, mostly $100 to $300 (₹8,800 to ₹26,400)Yes
Package markupNot published; built into the priceNo

In India, an overseas holiday package also carries GST (usually 5% for tour operators without input credit) and 2% TCS from 1 April 2026. TCS is advance income tax, adjusted when you file your return.

What does an agent do that a booking app or AI planner doesn't?

Three things, and they all happen after you have a plan.

  1. They catch what you did not know to check. A 50-minute self-transfer in Frankfurt, a hotel 40 minutes from where you will spend your evenings, a Schengen appointment that needed booking six weeks ago.
  2. They fix things when plans change. A delayed flight is one problem; the missed train, the hotel night and the tour booked for the next morning are three more. US advisors say delays and cancellations will affect their clients' travel more than rising costs (ASTA).
  3. They are accountable. If an app gives you a bad plan, you have no one to call. An agent has a name, an invoice and, in India, a consumer commission that can order refunds.

AI trip planners are good at the first draft: ideas, rough routes, a day-by-day outline. They are weaker at live prices, bookings, visas and changes. That gap is why AI and people are now being combined. Cura is an AI + human travel agent. You describe the trip by typing, talking or sending a reel, it builds a door-to-door plan and compares flights and stays side by side, and a human advisor checks the plan and steps in when the AI is not enough.

Are travel agents coming back?

In the US, yes. In ASTA's advisor survey, 30% said more than half their clients were using a travel advisor for the first time, and over two-thirds said clients were more likely to travel internationally than the year before (ASTA).

In India the picture is different but moving the same way. Big package sellers such as MakeMyTrip, Thomas Cook and SOTC already combine online booking with human experts, and new concierge services keep launching, from Swiggy's Crew to AI planners. The pattern is the same everywhere: people want the price transparency of the internet and a person when it matters.

What protections do you get with an agent?

Mostly the same flight rights as booking yourself, plus someone to enforce them.

RuleWhat it saysApplies when you book through an agent?
US DOT automatic refundsRefund if a flight is cancelled or changed by more than 3 hours domestic or 6 hours international and you decline the alternative; 7 business days on cardsYes, the rule covers ticket agents
India DGCA refund rules (from 26 Mar 2026)The airline is responsible for refunds on tickets bought through agents or portals, within 14 working daysYes
India Ministry of Tourism approvalVoluntary; many genuine agents are not on the listCheck reviews and invoices instead
Consumer commissions (India)Have ordered refunds where package terms were not shown or visa handling failedYes, keep every email and invoice

How do you pick a good travel agent?

Ask five questions. A good one answers all of them in one message.

  1. How are you paid on this trip? Commission, markup, fee, or a mix.
  2. Can I see flights and hotels priced separately?
  3. What happens if my visa is refused or late? Get the clause in writing.
  4. Who do I message if a flight is cancelled mid-trip, and when do they answer?
  5. Can you show me two options and say which you would pick? If they only ever offer one, you are being sold, not advised.

The same questions apply whether you want a personal travel agent, a travel concierge membership, or an Indian travel agent in the Bay Area or New Jersey who knows the routes home and the visa paperwork for parents visiting. For a side-by-side of named options, see Cura vs MakeMyTrip Holidays, Cura vs Thomas Cook and SOTC and the Swiggy Crew alternative.

Is a holiday package the same as using an agent?

Not quite. A package is a product: fixed hotels and days at one price. An agent can sell you a package or build a trip around you. Packages tend to win for group tours and peak dates; custom trips often win for couples on flexible dates. The full comparison is in holiday package vs custom trip, and the money side in travel agent vs booking yourself.

What we'd do

  • Book a simple trip yourself. One city and a hotel needs no help.
  • Use an agent for anything with a visa, three cities, or people who depend on you. Ask the five questions above first.
  • Pick help that shows its reasoning and its earnings. Cura shows flights and stays side by side, says what it would pick and why, and prints its commission on the receipt.

FAQ

Is it worth using a travel agent in 2026?

Yes for complex or international trips with visas, several cities or family. No for a simple flight and hotel, which is easy to book yourself.

Is it more expensive to use a travel agent?

Often not. Most agents earn about 10% commission from hotels and tours, not from you. Some charge a fee, mostly $100 to $300 (₹8,800 to ₹26,400) in the US, and packages carry a markup inside the price.

Can an AI trip planner replace a travel agent?

For ideas and a first draft, mostly yes. For live prices, bookings, visas and fixing things when plans change, you still want a person. That is why services like Cura pair AI with human advisors.

Do travel agents get better deals?

Sometimes: on group tours, packages and hotels with contracts. On a plain flight, prices are usually the same as booking direct.

How do I know a travel agent in India is genuine?

Government approval is voluntary, so check reviews, ask for a GST invoice, pay by card, and get the cancellation and visa-refusal terms in writing before paying.
