Best time to visit Sri Lanka, month by month
Written by Shubham, Cura travel advisor · Checked
Short answer
The best time to visit Sri Lanka is December to March for the south and west coasts, Galle, Ella and Kandy. The east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is best from May to September. Avoid October and November, when inter-monsoon rain hits most of the island. Some coast is always dry, so there is no truly bad month, only a wrong region.

Sri Lanka gets two monsoons. The southwest monsoon soaks the south and west coasts from May to September. The northeast monsoon hits the north and east from November to February. Plan around them and you get sun almost all year. For the full trip guide, see Sri Lanka trip from India.

Each month has its own page with temperatures, rain days and what is on: start with Sri Lanka in December or Sri Lanka in January.
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in June?
Split in two. The south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota) get the southwest monsoon: heavy showers and rough seas, so swimming is often unsafe. The east coast is dry and sunny, with calm water at Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah, and surf season at Arugam Bay. June is a good month if you build the trip around the east and the cultural triangle.
Is July or August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you go east. Both months are dry on the east coast and in Sigiriya, and they bring two big events: the Esala Perahera in Kandy, a 10-night procession of elephants and dancers, and the elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla. Book Kandy hotels early for Perahera week.
Is January a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
One of the best. The south coast and hills are dry and the train views are clear. It is also high season, so book hotels and train seats early.
When is Sri Lanka cheapest?
May, June, September and October. Hotel rates on the south coast can drop by a third or more. The trade-off is rain on that coast; the east coast and Sigiriya are still good in May to September.
Best time for each type of trip

| Whale watching | December to April (Mirissa) |
| Leopards in Yala | February to June (park usually closes for part of September and October) |
| Surfing | November to April (south), May to September (Arugam Bay) |

FAQ
Which is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
February. It is dry on the south and west coasts and in the hill country, which covers the classic route.
Is it safe to visit Sri Lanka during the monsoon?
Yes. Rain usually comes in afternoon bursts, not all day. Just go to the coast that is dry, and avoid swimming where the red flags are up.
What is Sri Lanka like in December?
The south coast dries out through the month and is usually sunny by Christmas, which is also peak price season. The east coast is rainy.
When should I avoid Sri Lanka?
October and November, when the inter-monsoon brings rain to most of the island at once.
